Clapgate

Other OS name in the Parish of Stondon Massey

Etymology

( 6 ″ ) is , no doubt , named from the swing - gates that , until the middle of the 19th century , at this point protected the parish from cattle straying on Kelvedon Common . The term clap-gate is very common indeed in the field - names of Essex . The field - name clappet , noted twice , may be for clap-yet , with earlier form yet for gate .
