Etymology

, The Sulphur Well , The Dinsdale Spa 1823 Surtees III242 ; discovered by accident in 1789 in an attempt to find coal , the sulphurous waters were found to cure rheumatism ; cold and warm baths were built in 1792 and after and the spa enjoyed a brief period of fame , being much frequented in summer and Spa Races being held here in 1842 , Surtees loc. cit. and VCH III 217 .
