Etymology

( 6″ ) ( local ) , Winspit quarry 1786, 1861 Hutch3, Winspit 1811OS , perhaps ' stone pit with a winch ' , v. wince , pytt ; Arkell ( 1940 ) 44 , ( 1941 ) 33 , suggests derivation from spitu ' a spit of land ' and dial . whin ' hard rock ' ( only NCy according to EDD and NED , though noted by Arkell as in use in Sx in 19th cent . ) , but Professor Löfvenberg points out that if the second el . is in fact spitu , the first may rather be wind 1 ' wind ' or winn 1 ' pasture ' .
