Etymology

, St . Luca (')s Leap (e )l16 Hutch1, Hutch3 , used of the gap where the narrow tip of The Foreland or Handfast Point supra has been detached by erosion from the mainland , v. hlēp ' a placethat can be crossed by leaping ' ; according to Legg 167 it takes its name from a greyhound which fell from the cliff here while coursing a hare , but perhaps the allusion is to Richard Lucas , rector of Studland 1536–78 (Hutch3) , cf. the nearby Parson's Barn supra .
