Noggets

Other OS name in the Parish of Studland

Etymology

, the name of a strip of wood on the N slope of the main Purbeck ridge near the Studland - Corfe C . bdy , and in fact also found as the name ( Noggetts ) of four fields in the Corfe C . TA ( 1844 ) clustered around the ancient Stone Circle just on the Corfe C . side of the bdy , cf. Rempstone in Corfe C . par . supra . The stones in the circle are ' irregularly-shaped boulders ofhard gritstone ' ( RCHMDo 2 513 ) , and the name Noggets probably means ' lumps (of stone) ' with reference to these , from ModE  nugget ( NED from 1852 , Barnes 85 ' a small knob ' ( of cheese ) ) , no doubt a derivative of SW dial . nug ' a lump, block ' , Do dial . nog ' a bigknob ' ( of cheese ) ( Barnes loc. cit . ) of unknown origin , v. - et(t)(e) .
