, Bridwell 1811 OS, Bridewell 1826 Gre , possibly ' well , spring or stream frequented by brides ( for fertility rites ? ) ' , v. brȳd , wella , but alternatively the first el . might be an OE  brȳd ' surging ' or brȳde ' surging stream ' suggested for this type of name by Löfvenberg 26 – 7 , cf. Bridewell W 150 , Bridwell D 537 , Bridewell(s) Gl 3 xi , 4 107 ; it lies ¼ mile W of a small stream ( an affluent of R . Frome ) rising ½ mile SE .
