, named from Alton Mead (e ) 1586 , c. 1685 both Batten , (Little ) Alton Mead 1840TA , the lower Alton , the upper Alton 1677Digby , all fields near the Leigh - Yetminster par . bdy which the lane crosses ; it also crosses a small stream which rises near here , so the name may well be ' farmstead at the source of a stream ' , from ǣwyll and tūn , cf. Alton P . par . supra .
