Etymology

( Gaunt Common 1811 OS ) ( Gaunts 1774 Hutch1, Gaunts Ho 1863 Hutch3 ) , cf. landesnamyd the great Gawntz 1535Midd , Gantts farme 1646 SC , Gaunts Hill 1838TA , probably named from John of Gaunt , Duke of Lancaster 1372 – 99 who was granted a fair at Holt in 1368 (CleggWim 185) ; the present house was built in 1809 , but Hutch1 291 writes of the earlier house ' tradition says it was aseat of John of Gaunt ' ; the extensive manor of Kingston Lacy ( lying immediately to the SW , v. under Pamphill par . infra ) belonged to the Duchy of Lancaster (Hutch3 3234) , cf. John O ' Gaunt 's Kitchen in Canford M . par . supra .
