Etymology

( Talland Farm 1811 OS, Tirland Farm 1838 TA ) ( Turlings Moor 1811 OS,Tirling Moor 1838TA ) , cf. Tirland Coppice & Tirland Point 1838ib , perhaps analogous with Turleigh W 125 ( Turlinge 1341 , Torlyng 1362 , Turlin 1699 ) , which the editors of PN W take to be from þyrelung ' piercing ' ( with reference to a deep curving valley ) , cf. also EPN 2222 , but which Ekwall PN - ing 231 thinks is a compound of turf ' turf ' or trun ' round ' and hlinc ' ridge ' .
