Ten Hide

Local district in the County of Devon

Etymology

Note. The following parishes form a detached area lying to the south of the Teign estuary. In DB the district contained thirteen manors of which the total hidage amounted to about ten hides. The whole area was therefore known as the 'Ten Hide,' and this was later, in the case of Combe and Stoke infra 460, corrupted to 'Teignhead' through the influence of the river- name.
