Etymology

is Elfe-hole 1631 PR, Elphole c. 1840TA . Cf. Elfe Cragge 1631 PR , Elfgate 1633 ib . Apparently ' elf hole . ' Cf. Elfa-hills (supra 209) and Elva Hill (infra 435) . The Rev . W . S . Sykes tells us that this is the probable site of the Furness Abbey salt works .
