is Screes 1783 Donald, Eskdale Screes 1794 H . This contains scree ( v. NED ) , precipitous stony slope upon a mountain side , ' from ON  skriða , ' landslip . ' The screes in question may have given rise to the name Scrithesedge in this parish , recorded in 1587 (Eskdale ) .
