Etymology

( 109–335875 ) 1842 OS , Tranmere Slyne c.1580 J.E.A., the Sleyne 1693 ib, Slyne ,Sline 1776, 1777 ib , from slinu ' a slope ' ; the river bed shelves down - wards steeply here . This is the best known and safest Mersey anchorage , with depths up to 55 feet and a bottom of sand and mud with good holding ground ( J.E.A. ) .
