Etymology

, Wickham Knight Meadows 1842TA ; this may be another instance of the name wīchām , for which v. 24 . The bridge is at GR 581663 , exactly a mile from the Roman road from Silchester to Speen . Knight may be OE  cniht , a word of some significance in association with wīchām , but there was a house of Knights Hospitallers in Brimpton , just over a mile away , and it may be a reference to these medieval ' knights ' .
