Ruscombe Lake

Other OS name in the Parish of Ruscombe

Etymology

, 1822 OS , this is now the name of a low , marshy tract , and in VCH iii, 203 , it is considered to refer to an actual lake which has disappeared . It is , however , possible ( as suggested in Crawford 130 ) that Lake is from OE  lacu , and that the name referred originally to the stream here , cf. Shurlock Row 113 . The VCH article gives the modern name of this stream as River Broadwater ( cf. Broadwater and Broadwater Lane in St Nicholas Hurst ) . A possible earlier name is discussed 117 .
