Early-attested site in the Parish of Throckmorton

Historical Forms

  • Tuwelesbrugge 1229 Ch
  • Tylesford 1634 QSR
  • Tiles Hall 1892 Kelly

Etymology

There is very little to go upon here, but comparison with the forms of Tilsworth (PN BedsHu 133) suggests that the original name was þȳfeles -brycg , 'the bridge of one Thyfel,' a name the existence of which can well be assumed from the evidence set forth for Tilsworth.
