Etymology

The DB form is almost certainly corrupt, the first l being an error. Assuming that to be the case, we may suggest that the first element is a pers. name Æmela , a weak form of the pers. name Æmele found once in a signature to a charter of King Offa (BCS 208). The name therefore means 'Æmela's cottages.'
