Etymology

This is a difficult name. There is the possibility of an OE  pers. name Cāfa of which we have derivatives in the Cǣfca of the Crawford Charters (p. 61) and the Cǣfel of a coin. OE  Cāfanhrycg may have become Căveridge with trisyllabic shortening. It is clear that at a later stage the history of the word has been obscured by some folk-etymologising process. Hence 'Cafa's ridge.' v. hrycg .
