Etymology
This must be, as Duignan suggests (PN Wo 123), OE (se ) ōðer tūn , 'the other or second farm,' in relation to some previous settlement. Cf. Otherton (St), DBOrretone , 1166 P Odertona . Professor Tait aptly notes the parallel usage whereby DB speaks of a vill thrown off as an offshoot of another vill as alia villa (IPN 123).
