Etymology

There can be no doubt that this is the same name as the common Hale, with variant form Hele, discussed in PN D 46, s. n. Hele. Cf. la Hele (14th AD v) in Lacock and le Hele (1243 SarumCh) in Alderbury. It is from the dat. sg. of healh , 'nook, corner,' which is apt as a description of land in the well-marked bend of the Avon here. The forms Hyle , etc. show an early raising of e to i (y ).
