Etymology

Morgan's Vale. This is a modern residential district. The site is marked as Morgans Bottom , i.e. 'Morgan 's valley' in 1820 (G) and c. 1840 (TA ). The surname Morgan has not been noted in connection with Downton but is found in Salisbury and adjacent parishes from the 16th to the 19th century (PCC, ParReg).
