Etymology

'Winter 's mound or burial place,' v. hlæw . An exact parallel is Wintres hlæw 940 (c. 1225) BCS 761 in the bounds of Garford (Berks). At the present day we have East, West and Middle Winterslow. The last was formerly Middleton (v. infra ). The manor of East Winterslow is now Roche Court infra . Uppington presumably refers to East Winterslow, the highest of the three. For the form lew , v. Introd. xx.
