Etymology

Winterbourne must be the name of the upper part of the river Kennet, v. supra 8. Winterbourne Monkton was held by Glastonbury Abbey (DB). Winterbourne Bassett, which Alan Basset received from his uncle Walter de Dunstanville, was confirmed to him by Richard i in 1194 (BM). Cf. Wootton Bassett supra 272.
