Etymology

East Stowell (6″) and West Stowell is Stawelle 1176 P (p), 1202 Cur (p), Stowelle 13thBradenstoke , 1229 StOsmund, 1249Ass , Eststowelle 1327SR , Weststouwelle 1392 Pat. Probably 'spring' or 'stream with steened channel,' i.e. with an edging of sarsen, v. stan , wielle . Cf. Stowford supra 124.
