Etymology

v. ieg , ford . There is no island here, but the name may have reference to the flat marshy land by the Frome just to the south of the place. Distinguished as near Farleigh Hungerford (So).The 1458 form must be due to wrong division of a ME  atten iford ; cf. Nash Hill supra 103.
