Etymology

'West burh.' West perhaps because near the western border of the county. The exact meaning of burh here is uncertain.There is no ancient fort nearer than Bratton Castle. Under the Plain , the town lying at the extreme north-west corner of Salisbury Plain, v. supra 17.
