Etymology

Clear Wood (6″) is Clerwode 1348, Clerewod 1516Longleat , Clerewood 1568 BM. The first element is probably OFr  clere , 'glade,' as noted in Clearfields (PN Bk 119). Cf. Clears Fm infra 247, le Est Clere , West Clere (1448Kings ) in Brixton Deverill, and Bridge Cleere (1651 WM xlvi) in Braydon Forest.
