Etymology

The ground here is broken downland and the first element may be OE  ears , 'arse,' with reference to the shape of the ground.The second is OE  græfe, 'thicket.' Cf. Lands Arse Acre (TA ) in Orcheston St Mary and Landcross (PN D 94). Later the name was probably altered deliberately.
