Etymology

A compound of OE  slāh -þorn , 'sloe-thorn or bush,' and ford. This etymology, which was apparently first suggested by Stevenson (Asser 276–7) is strongly supported by the Assize Roll forms quoted above, slāh -þyrne is also possible (B.D.).
