Etymology
Ekwall (DEPN) suggests that the name may go back to an original hamtun -worþ , but it is very difficult to accept his further suggestion that this is elliptical for Hamtunscir -worþ , i.e. 'farm on the Hampshire (border).' No parallel for such a formation can be adduced and it does not seem to be a likely one.
