Etymology

This is not an easy name. The forms from the charters come from late ME transcripts. Persistent early Net (e )lington , Netlinton make Ekwall's suggestion (DEPN) of an adj. netlen as the first element unlikely on the score of form. Perhaps we should rather take the name as containing the OE  personal name *Nēðel found in Netteswell (PN Ess 46) and Nettlesworth (PN Sx 465), with connective ing . Hence 'Nēðel 's farm.'
