Etymology

For Deverill , v. supra 6. Monkton means 'monks' farm,' v. tun . The manor belonged to Glastonbury as early as DB. It was also known as Over Deverill , perhaps in the sense of 'upper.'to distinguish it from Longbridge Deverill which is lower down the stream (Hoare 176), and Est Monkton to distinguish it from another Monkton belonging to the same Abbey (ib. 177).
