Etymology

Mappledore Hill (6″) is Mapeldreshille , Mapelderhil 1281Ass , Mapeldorehulle 1285MinAcct , 1300 Ipm, Maperdorehill 1563Rental , Mapedere hill 1606LRMB . 'Maple-tree hill,' cf. Mappowder (PN Do 206). The name repeated itself a few miles to the east in mapeldere hille (KCD 641) in the bounds of Tisbury.
