Etymology

'Lāfa 's farm,' v. ingtun . Bishops or West Lavington was held in DB by the Bishop of Salisbury. Roger Gernon held Market Lavington manor in 1242 (Fees). Chepyng is another name for Market Lavington. It was also known as Steeple Lavington, probably from the church steeple, but some of the forms show confusion with staple , denoting 'a market,' Cf. Steeple Ashton supra 136.
