Etymology

The older name means 'five hides,' v. Fifield supra 207 and Introd. xviii. Later the element ingtun seems to have been added to it so as to make it conform to a more usual type. The Verdon family have not been noted in medieval documents nearer than at Stoke Farthing (supra 206).
