Etymology

'Wide clearing or wood,' cf. North Bradley supra 138. Suht (sic) in contrast to that place. There was a small cell here, belonging to Amesbury. In 1178 (BM) the place is referred to as Deverell Puellarum from these same nuns. It lies on the old Deverill stream, v. Deverill supra 6.
