Etymology

This is clearly a place-name of post-Conquest origin, but the first element is obscure. Possibly on the model of such trade- names as chapman , packman , there was formed a trade-name huk-man for one who engaged in small trading (cf. huckere , huckstere ), giving rise perhaps to a personal name Hukman .Hence 'Hukman -farm,' v. tun .
