Etymology

West Dunley Fm is Dynelawe in villa de Lytleton 1289Ass , Dunelewe 1308 Ipm, Donlewe 1348Cor , Donelewe 1425FF , Dunley Hill 1630 WM xliv. This was the hundred meeting- place, v. supra 75. The name is also found in East Dunley Fm and Cottages in Hullavington and Dunley Wood in Grittleton, so it is difficult to say just where the hlaw was. Probably it was at the top of the hill now marked Elm and Ash where Alderton, Littleton Drew and Hullavington parishes meet. The Elm and the Ash may have marked the actual meeting-place. The first element is uncertain as the forms are inconsistent with one another. For lewe , v. Introd. xx.
