Historical Forms

  • Covehouse 1633 WIpm
  • la Cove 1270 For 1289 Ass

Etymology

Cove House Fm is la Cove t. Ed 3For , Covehouse 1633 WIpm and was the home of Richard de la Cove (1270For , 1289Ass ).This must be from OE  cofa , cf. Cove (PN D 542). As the place is on low-lying land not far from the Thames, there can be no question of any meaning 'hollow, recess in hillside.' The word may here have the sense 'shed, building.'
