Etymology

Originally one of the manors of Tytherton in Chippenham (supra 91–2). It was held by William de Caillewey (13th RegMalm) and by Elias de Kaillewey (1227 FF). Later the place- name itself was dropped from the compound as in Chenies and Latimer (PN Bk 221, 225), Virley (PN Ess 323), Cottles and Pinkney (infra 110, 115), the manorial addition alone remaining.
