Etymology

Birdlime Fm. Cf. chapel of Burdlyme al. Burdlymes in Idmyston 1554 Pat, Porton al. Byrdlyme 1560FF , Burdlins c. 1840TA .It marks the site of the chapel of Porton, founded by Lucia Burgelon c. 1323 (WM xxxv, 538). Later spellings are Burglem , Birdlyme (ib.), the later and modern forms of the name being corruptions due to popular etymology.
