Etymology

This is probably from OE  higna dun , 'down or hill belonging to a religious or secular household,' v. higna . It is worthy of note that we have mention in the neighbouring parish of Fonthill (BCS 591) of one Aeþelm Higa who clearly belonged to such a household, possibly to the household of King Alfred himself at Wardour.
