Etymology

Stert's Fm is le Steurte 1277Rental , Stert 1646Recov , Stertgrounds 1692Longleat , and was the home of William atte Sterte (1327SR ) or atte Steorte (1332 ib.) and Robert de Stert (1362 Fry), v. steort , 'tail, point of land.' The farm is on a tongue of land between the Thames and the Bydemill Brook. The s is pseudo-manorial.
