If the OE  form is to be relied on, the first element must be the recorded personal name Punt , cf. Pointers (PN Sr 89), Pounsley (PN Sx 393) and Poyntington (PN Do 301). The second element is stan , 'stone,' no doubt an old boundary stone, ing is used as a connective.
