Startley Fm is silvum q. v. Stercanlei 688 (c. 1125) BCS 71, Sterckle 13th RegMalm, Sterkele 1249Ass , Sterkle 1409FF , Startley 1558–79 ECP, Starkley grove 1603 NQ iii. Possibly from OE (æt þǣm ) stearcan lēage , a compound of OE  stearc , 'stiff, unbending' and leah , probably with reference to the wood or forest.
