Etymology

The first element is perhaps OE  wull , 'wool,' as in Woolwich (K) (DEPN s. n .), referring to a farm where wool was prepared or kept, v. tun . The full series of forms given here do not support the suggestion in DEPN (s. n .) that this is a compound of OE  wiell, wyll , 'spring.'
