Etymology

'Fobba 's spring,' v. funta . Cf. Fobbing (PN Ess 156), Vobster in Mells (So), Fobbestor (re )1233 FF, 1327 SR (p), and Fob Down in Alresford (Ha), Fobedon (e )1327SR (p), 1332 Winton.Not far off in the bounds of Downton we have (to ) fobban wylle (948 BCS 863). See Fobwell in Downton infra 394. Some of the later forms show the same tendency to develop final hunt which was noted under Tolleshunt (PN Ess 306) and Chadshunt (PN Wa 249–50).
