Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN) is probably right in taking this name to be a reduction of OE  grēnehāmstede , 'green homestead.' For a similar reduction cf. the history of Palmstead (KPN 41), Perhamstede BCS 176, Permestede 1226Ass .
