Etymology

This may be for earlier chiknesgrava or it may be direct from chicke which already appears independently in the 14th century (NED s. v .) as a reduced form of chicken . In Chicksgrove, chick may be used of the bird or it may be a nickname used as a surname, v. græfe and infra 432–3.
