Langdean (Circle)

Early-attested site in the Parish of East Kennett

Etymology

Langdean (Circle) (6″). Cf. Langedeneswyk 1289Ass , Langeden t. Hy 8AOMB . Mr G. M. Young notes that this 'long valley' is mentioned in the bounds of Stanton St Bernard (BCS 600) where the boundary, as it comes down the eastern side of that parish, goes on longan dene neoðewearde , i.e. to the bottom of Langdean. He notes further that, in the other versions of this charter (BCS 998, 1053), we have the faulty reading andlang dene neoþewearde . The boundary does not go 'along' the valley. It goes up to it and crosses it.
